The Bell in Lord Hanuman’s tail

The Bell in Hanuman’s tail – is an interesting feature that can be seen not just in Vyasa-Anjaneya pratima-s but also in many pratima-s across Bharata bhUmi. I have learnt one legend associated with it from elders.

Here is the legend…

Before leaving for Lanka, Sri Rama raised an army of monkeys & bears. He assured the families of these warriors that “I loose none but will return with all.”

Vanara(Monkey) army was filled with many varieties of monkeys with varied shape, size& battle power. ‘singilIka’ was one such monkey variety of dwarf vAnarAs. singilIkA-s don’t carry weapons but use teeth & nails to attack enemies. They engage in deadly melees&fall upon enemy en-mass.

Now, we come to the time & setting wherein an epic battle between Rama & Ravana was raging. Many of Ravana’s finest generals & warriors including his many sons have fallen in the battle. Left with no option, Ravana woke up his sleeping, giant sibling – Kumbhakarna.

Ravana ordered him to fight Rama. Kumbhakarna tried to reason with his elder brother but went into battle due to brotherly love. He came to battle field raiding a huge chariot. This chariot was decorated with a string of tiny bells around its canopy.

The giant Rakshasa fought with great gusto only to succumb to deadly rAma bANa. As Kumbhakarna started falling off from chariot, his hand hit against a bell hung to the canopy. Due to the impact of Kumbhakarna’s mighty hand, the bell got disjointed & fell on the ground.

That very moment, a team of 1000 singilIka-s were moving towards a rakshasa. They got trapped under this bell which was a huge as a mountain for their size. Unaware of what befell on them & unable to figure out why sudden darkness wrapped them in, singilIkAs started worrying.

Few moments later, one monkey said “I fear no one would be saving us?” Another said “We are doomed.” Yet another said “It is our fault to come here.” After sometime, some monkeys have started finding fault with their king, Sugreeva.

The fit of rage caught up with many & they began to accuse Rama & Hanuma as the reason for their misery. An aged monkey among the lot shouted over others to calm down & said “Let us not loose hope in Sri Rama. Let’s chant his nAma & see what happens.”

Having got nothing much to do singilIkA-s one-by-one engaged in Rama nama smaraNa.

Meanwhile, outside the bell, Ravana too got killed by Rama bANa marking the end of the battle. Now, Rama sitting in his camp ordered Sugreeva to take a count of his armies. Sugreeva returned to Rama with 1000 nos. short. Rama ordered for re-count but to no avail.

Rama got up by saying to Hanuma – “Lead the way into the battle field, I will search for the missing companions.” On hearing this, Hanuma started towards the battle field strewn with bodies of slain rakshas, broken charriots, spears, shields etc.

As Hanuma was clearing the debris, Rama started looking either sides for clues that could lead to missing monkeys. Little far into the field, Rama stopped midway & pointed towards a bell.

All got surprised by this act & were looking quizzically at Rama. Meanwhile, Hanuma having understood the mind of Rama, instantaneously put his tail into the ring of the bell & lifted it gently.

There, inside the bell, were 1000 tiny monkey warriors with closed eyes & tAraka nAma on their lips. Thus went a uproar “Jaya Jaya Rama…Jaya Jaya Rama” like a thunder from the sky.

Having the silence thus far surrounding them shattered & a flood of bright light hitting their eyes, those small singilIkA-s came to senses & opened their eyes.

Ah! There He is…AjAnubAhu, aravinda dalAyatAksha, niShAcharadhvamsi, the ever beautiful Rama Swamy!

Unable to believe their bhAgya & caught unprepared to welcome it, those singilIkA-s stood like images drawn by a skilled painter. An another round of applause by rest of army caused the tiny warriors to know what to be done next.

They prostrated before the lotus feet of Sri Rama in reverence, with devotion but more importantly to condone their retribution of doubting Sri Rama.

Rama smiled & bestowed his sacred ‘karaspArsha’ that even Sri Lakshmi can’t have at Her will.

Later Rama turned his eyes towards Hanuma, standing tall among kapi-s but slightly bent in obedience in his Swamy’s presence. A shining bell in his tail he looked like prasanna, abhaya, varada AnjanEya. Bhagawan Rama was beyond limits to see him so.

Rama bestowed a boon that whoever worship Hanuma with bell in tail will be bestowed with greater jnAna, bhakti & vairAgya. They will be brought out from ignorance just like how those singilIkA-s were released by vAyuputra from darkness.

CELEBRATION:

Hanuman Jayanti celebration indicates the balanced coexistence of the whole human fraternity with nature’s incredible creature, Lord Hanuman from Vanara community. People from the Hindu religion worship Lord Hanuman as a divine creature. This celebration has lots of importance to all, however, Brahmacharis, wrestlers and bodybuilders are especially inclined towards this celebration. There are many names through which Lord Hanuman is famous among his devotees like Bajrangabali, Pavanasuta, Pavankumar, Mahavira, Balibima, Marutsuta, Anjanisut, Sankat Mochan, Anjaneya, Maruti, Rudra and many more.

Hanuman avatar is considered as the 11th Rudra avatar of the Lord Siva with great devotion, strength, knowledge, divine power, bravery, intelligence, spirit for selfless service and etc. He has devoted his life only for his Lord Rama and Mata Sita and never shows his bravery and intelligence without any purpose. He is worshipped in many ways by his devotees; some meditates by repeating his name many times to get power, fame, success and etc in the life whereas some read the Hanuman Chalisa to get the same.

Becoming Hanuman:

To become Hanuman we must awaken to our inner nature as a portion of cosmic consciousness. Each one of us has the power of the entire universe within us.

But we can only recognise this when we become aware of our inner Self, what the Upanishads call the antaryami or inner controller. Hanuman is the force of Rama working within us, the strength of our innermost self that is the ruler of all.

It is Hanuman alone who can discover Sita Devi. Sita represents the deeper Self-knowledge or Atma Vidya, through which Rama or the self can be fully realised.

Sita is also the feminine principle of space and receptivity that the cosmic Vayu depends upon. Without Hanuman, we cannot find Sita, and Rama cannot fulfill his destiny of the highest dharma.

Let us not forget our own deeper cosmic energy in our fascination with the latest information technology that is but its shadow. Hanuman reveals to us the way of transcendence.

HAPPY RAMNAVAMI (THE APPEARANCE DAY OF LORD RAM) TO EVERYONE 😊🙏🏻

LORD RAM/RAMA/SHRI RAMACHANDRA:

The 7th Incarnation of The God Vishnu, He was born in Treta Yuga. Maharshi Vashishtha had given him this name “Rama”.
The Perfect Avatar of Supreme Protector Lord Vishnu, The Symbol of Courtesy and Virtue, The Embodiment of Truth & Morality, The Best of Upholders of Dharma, Maryada Purushottam, The Exemplary Combination of Love, Compassion & Strength.

The words ‘rays’ and radiance’ come from the Sanskrit root word ‘ra’. ‘Ra’ means light, ‘Ma’ means within me, in my heart. So, Rama means the light within me. That which is radiant in every particle of being is Rama.

Lord Rama was born to Dasharath and Kousalya
Dasharath means ‘Ten Chariots’. The ten chariots symbolize the five sense organs and five organs of action. Kousalya means ‘skill’. The skilful rider of the ten chariots can give birth to Ram. When the ten are used skilfully, radiance is born within.

Lord Rama was born in Ayodhya. Ayodhya means ‘a place where no war can happen’. When there is no conflict in our mind, then the radiance can dawn.

The word Rama means one who is divinely blissful and who gives joy to others, and one in whom the sages rejoice. Try to be Rama in actions.

Lord Rama was born on the 9th day of Chaitra Navratras. He killed Ravan on 10th day after worshipping Shakti for 9 days during Sharadiya Navratras. Hindus should ponder this image.

The Lord of the Raghus, King Ramacandra! The purifier of the fallen! Glories to Sri Sri Sita Rama! The auspicious Lord of the Mountain, Sita Rama! The Ones dear to the devotees, Sita Rama! All glories, all glories to the descendent of the Raghu dynasty!

Glories to Sri Rama, who is the Giver of happiness, the Auspicious One, who is as lustrous as the moon, to the ever-lasting one, the Lotus-eyed One, the Abode of Laksmi, the King of kings, and the Most Exalted of the Raghu dynasty.

Though His face is like a spotless moon, still it is further brightened by a shining crown of jewels. His earrings resemble Jupiter and Venus rising in the evening sky. I forever worship this Lord Sri Rama, guru of the three worlds.

Lord Rama is the personification of dharma. Lord Rama is called Maryada Purushottama; an epitome of the Perfect Man or Lord of Self-Control. A person of impeccable integrity and moral values.

According to Vishnu Sahasranama, a list of thousand names of Lord Vishnu, Rama is the 394th name of Lord Vishnu.

O Lord Ramacandra, O Husband of Sita, O Son of Dasaratha, O chief descendant of the Raghu dynasty, O lotus-eyed Son of Kausalya, O elder brother of Laksmana, O Master of Hanuman. Oh older brother of Bharata! O Lord Who holds a bow in His hand. all glories unto You!

O Lord who performed the activities of a saintly person wandering in the Danaka forest, O Lord who holds a bow in his hand, O killer of demon Dusana, O builder of the bridge across the ocean, O shelter of Vibhisana, O killer of Ravana, the daemonic king of Lanka, O Lord of the Kosala province, all glories upto you.

Chief of the house of Raghu, Lord Rama,
Upliflers of those who have fallen, Sita and Rama, Sita and Rama, Sita and Rama,
O beloved, praise Sita and Rama,
Glories to Rama, Glories to his devotee bhakta Hanuman,
Bless everyone with this wisdom, Lord.

Merciful Lord, Compassionate to poor n benefactor of Kaushalya is born, Mother is joyous on seeing him, thought of whose marvelous form steal hearts of sages.

Beautiful to the eyes, his hue like a rain-cloud, weapons in his four hands; a necklace of forest-flowers, large eyes, slayer of demon Khar is an ocean of beauty.

You’re compassion n bliss personified, an ocean of virtue; vedas n sages sing your glories. O Beloved of all, O Lord of Laxmi, you are born for my sake.

Vedas say You can create a universe from one pore of Your body by Your Maya. That you lived in my womb, even wise find it difficult to believe.

Lord Rama is

Sruta Bhashi: Rama always spoke truth

Hita Bhashi: He spoke whatever was pleasant to hear.

Mita Bhashi: He spoke very little.

Purva Bhashi: He did not wait for others to open a dialogue. He opened the conversation.

He was born to Vanquish the greatest Evil that existed Millennias ago

He was born to go the distance thousand of yojans(miles) over Lane & Sea to rescue his Love.

He was the first man to use most powerful weapon in ancient India Brahmastra(nuclear weapon)

He was born to be a complete Man

He was born to create Ram Rajya (a perfectly governed Kingdom)

He was born to give us hope that Good always Rises above Evil.

He was born to be Legend.

He was Ram.

Shri Ram/Rama is revered because he exemplified that no matter what trials & tribulations one goes through; one can go through life untouched & maintain absolute inner balance & equanimity.

Shri Ramachandra is hugely worshipped. He had continuous problems: the worst kind of drama was happening, a completely disastrous life, but he remained balanced. He did his administration and whatever work he had to do with such balance and efficiency that after thousands of years, when we talk about an ideal nation, we say “Rama Rajya” (a perfectly governed kingdom).
Whatever happened in his life, if just one of those things happened to someone, most people will crack up. He was facing serial disasters, but still he was doing everything to the best of his ability in the given moment and fulfilling his duties, whatever he had to do.

The Ramayana (an ancient vedic hindu epic poem, story of Lord Rama) is not just a story which happened long ago; it has a philosophical, spiritual significance and a deep truth in it. It is said that the Ramayana is happening in your own body.

Your soul is Rama, your mind is Sita(wife of Rama), your breath or life force(pranam) is Hanuman(greatest devotee of Rama), your awareness is Laxmana(younger brother of Rama), and your ego is Ravana(enemy of Lord Rama). When the mind was stolen by Ravana(the ego) then the soul got restless. Now the soul cannot reach the mind on its own, it has to take help of the breath – the prana. With the help of the prana, the mind got reunited with the soul, and the ego vanished.

You cannot control what the world throws at you. But what you make out of it is one hundred percent yours. Sri Rama is an epitome of this.

Ram Rajya is the rule of Dharma that honors the universal truth of Self-realization, such as the great Rishis and Yogis taught to Sri Ram, from the Ramayana to Yoga Vasishta.

May Lord Rama the epitome of righteous actions, compassion, simplicity, sacrifice, courage guide us in our path to attainment of a selfless life always.

HAPPY WORLD POETRY DAY 😊

Heart it is, not a brick or stone
Why shouldn’t it feel the pain?
Let none tyrannize this heart
Or I shall cry again and again
Neither the temple, nor the mosque
Nor on someone’s door or porch
I await on the path where He will tread
Why others should compel me to go?
The illumined grace that lights up the heart
And glows like the midday sun
That Self that annihilates all sights
When then it hides in the mysterious net?
The amorous glance is the deadly dagger
And the arrows of emotions are fatal
Your image may be equally powerful
Why should it appear before you?
The rules of life and bonds of sorrow
In reality are the one manifestation
Before realizing the ultimate truth
How can then one attain liberation?
Love is laden with noble thoughts
Yet what remains is the carnal shame
Trust conscience the still little voice
Why do you want test the rival?
There the pride of modesty resides
Here dwells the social morality
How shall we meet, on which road
Why should he invite me to the abode?
True he is an atheist
Unfaithful and unchaste
Dear to who is faith and heart
Why should he then venture there?
Without the wretched ‘Ghalib’
Has any activity come to a halt?
What then is the need to cry?
What then is the need to brood?

~ Mirza Ghalib

(Ghalib, born Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan, on 27 December 1797 – died 15 February 1869 in Delhi, was a prominent Urdu and Persian-language poet during the last years of the Mughal Empire. He used his pen-names of Ghalib and Asad.)
